Blog Highlight

This week’s post serves to feature another blog in my class.

The Book Berry is written by Jessica Krpejs who is another graduate student at ASU. I really enjoy reading her blog every week because it is colorful, personal, thoughtful, and always relates back to teaching.

The biggest thing that stands out to me about her blog is her modeling for teachers and students alike. She always makes sure to include how she would relate that week’s topic back to her own future classroom in a practical and achievable way. In this I’ve learned to not only absorb teaching practices and connections but to also take that a step further and transform what I’ve learned to fit my own students. As a writer, I’ve learned from Jessica to be more persistent and patient with myself, as good writing does not happen when rushed or is impersonal. I aspire to infuse my writing with who I am, just as Jessica does. Whether you are a teacher or not, Jessica relates her blog posts back to her life and herself every time, so that she reaches a wider audience than those just in the field of education. She makes writing fun and seem effortless, which is a good example to students to show how writers are made, not born. She is one of best examples I’ve seen of what it means to be a teacher-writer, as she not only provides specific examples of how she would teach her students but also provides specific examples of how she has first tried her teaching out in her own writing. Her blog is an easy read and a great resource for all teachers!

Here is my favorite post, as I was able to see her revision process, growth, and bravery in sharing up close. She not only taught us personally in class about the revision process but also used her writing as a detailed example of teaching revision strategies.

Here is where Jessica connects poetry and her own classroom experience. I loved reading about her classroom connections and it inspired some ideas for teaching poetry for me!
